Can Chickens Eat Tortillas? Find Out Right Here!

I have a few friends that raise chickens. One of their favorite things to feed them is tortillas. It’s inexpensive, it’s easy to get, they love the taste and they’re full of dietary protein.

I found this to be very interesting since the first thing I thought about when I heard “chickens eat tortillas” was Mexican food. You see, I’ve always just thought of tortillas as a snack for me.

This should also be the case with chickens. You should not overfeed your chickens with tortillas.

Let’s deep dive into what type of tortillas are good for your chickens.

Is it safe to feed flour tortillas to chickens?

Chickens should not eat flour tortillas all the time because they contain white flour which is not good for them.

White flour has no nutritional value and it doesn’t provide any protein or minerals that your chickens need to stay healthy and strong.

Tortillas can be a fun treat for your chickens and they will enjoy eating them. You can feed tortillas to your flock in moderation. They make a nice snack or treat, but flour tortillas can be detrimental to the health of chickens.

Are Corn Tortillas Better Than Flour Tortillas?

The corn tortilla is made of corn and water, while the flour tortilla is made out of wheat flour, lard or shortening, salt, baking powder, and water.

Using corn tortillas instead of flour ones will benefit your chickens in a number of ways:

  1. The corn tortilla is a much healthier option for your chickens than the flour tortilla. The corn tortilla has only six ingredients, whereas the flour tortilla has at least ten different ingredients that include lard or shortening, salt and sodium bicarbonate which adds to its shelf life but also makes it unhealthy for your chickens.
  2. Corn tortillas contain more protein than flour tortillas do which makes them healthier for your chickens as well as more nutritious for them if you’re going to feed them human food rather than chicken feed.
  3. Corn tortillas also contain less sugar and fat than flour tortillas do so they’re better for your chickens’ health too!

The best way to feed your chickens corn tortillas is to crush them into crumbs and mix them with other foods in the chicken’s diet (for example, ground beef).

Are Tortilla Wraps Good For Chickens?

Yes, and you can mix them with meat and cheese. Chickens love both vegetables and fruit, so this is a great way to get them some extra nutrients in their diet.

If you have any leftover tortillas from your morning breakfast (or even if they’re slightly stale), they can be crumbled up and thrown into the chicken coop for a treat. Just make sure that there are no onions or garlic in the recipe, since these foods may give your chickens diarrhea or other digestive issues.

Should Chickens Eat Raw Tortillas?

The short answer is yes. Chickens can eat raw tortillas, but they should not be used as a primary food source. Many people believe that tortillas are good for chickens because they think that the raw tortilla is similar to bird feed.

However, this is not true.

The raw tortillas should be given to your chickens in limited amounts only. The reason why you should not give your chickens a large number of tortillas is because it contains too many carbohydrates and fat for the birds to eat on a regular basis.

Can you safely feed chickens tortilla chip crumbs?

Chickens love tortilla chips!

Process of cooking cheese Tortilla chips with olive oil on baking sheet after oven, homemade salty savory pastry snack in the kitchen. Selective focus with copy space.

If you want to feed tortillas chips to your flock, it’s good to crush them first. This will prevent any choking accidents from happening as well as make it easier for the birds to eat their new treat.

You can add some veggies too!

What about expired tortillas?

I give them the expired ones that I can’t eat. They are not picky and will eat them just fine.

My question is, would it hurt my chickens to feed them expired tortillas? Or does the expiration date mean that it has gone bad? Will it make them sick?

If you have a dog or cat, then you know that there are only a few things that will kill them: chocolate, grapes, and raisins. Raisins are listed because they’re toxic to dogs even if they’ve been soaked in water overnight, so I don’t think it’s worth risking your pets’ health by feeding expired tortillas.

My guess is that your chickens won’t get sick from eating expired tortillas either, but who knows what could happen? If you want to take the risk and save money on chicken feed then go ahead, but don’t feel bad if something happens to your flock.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, tortillas can be fed to chickens, but with the proper precautions in place.

In order to sustain a healthier flock and ensure that their diet is of the highest quality possible, homesteaders should be cautious about substitution. Remember to keep your chickens hydrated and don’t overfeed them.

Tortillas can be included as a fun treat for your flock, but this food should not make up more than 10% of their total diet.
