Toys For Your Chickens – For Better Entertainment In The Coop!

Some time ago we at the typesofchicken.com team presented our readers with some DIY Projects, and our readers complained a bit that they could not understand the principle of how they work. We had long discussions on the subject of fixing this problem for our readers and we came up with the solution that will most likely get you to easier understand the process of how these contraptions work. With the help of our children we managed to get some very satisfying images that will hopefully motivate you to build one of these toys for your chickens.

1. The Bottle, The String And The Stick Vol.2

In our previous version of this contraption we suggested that you use two pieces of string but after some reconsideration of the whole process we found that using only one string will give a lot more mobility to the toy, and that means more fun for your chickens.

So the whole point of this contraption is to add more movement for your chickens while they are getting their treat. It is fun for your chickens as well as a lot of fun to watch.

As you can see on the image above, the first thing you need to do is drill a hole into the wooden stick so the string can past trough it. Remember the string passes only through the stick not through the bottle. Speaking of the bottle – you need to cut it on one side enough so the stick can pass trough, and on the other side you need to make a few holes so the chickens can peck easier.

Once you have done this, you need to connect the string from one end of your chicken run to the other. It needs to be high enough so your chickens CAN reach it. The string needs to be connected as tight as possible to the ends of your run. Fill a half of the bottle with your chicken`s favorite treats and let them jump in.

The more your chickens peck at the bottle, the more it will move and trust me it is the funniest thing to watch.

2. The Treat Skewer That Can Make Your Chickens Smarter

As we said before, we at the typesofchicken.com team want to leave room for your creativity and improvisation skills to kick in so we made this image as simple as possible so you can understand the process on how it works and what you can add or remove to make it work for your needs and expectations.

As you can see on the image above, this marvelous contraption works on a similar principle as an automatic skewer, because you don’t have to rotate the skewer yourself.

You can connect the wooden boards with the rotating pipe using some nails or tie them up tightly together. You should do the same with the apples or whatever treat your chickens prefer because we at the typesofchicken.com team want you to use whatever leftover material you have and improvise as much as possible.

Other than the fact that the boards need to be the same size and the treats should be the same weight at each board – there are two crucial things you need to know for this contraption to fully work and we will explain them to you.

Do not put more than 500 gr (1 pound) of treats on the boards (half a pound on each board) because what makes the boards rotate is the small force your chickens provide by pecking. This is very important because you want your chickens to peck at one side then move next to the other one once the pipe connected to the boards rotates.

The second crucial thing to know is that the holding pipes should be very strong and as less as movable as possible, you can plant them in the ground and that will ensure that they remain in their place.
Do your best to make sure that the treats that are on top at the moment are not in your chickens reach because that can lead to a big mess in your chicken run.  This is not completely necessary but it is recommended so try to do it.
